Security officers are generally uniformed to represent their lawful authority to protect private property. Security guards are generally governed by legal regulations, which set out the requirements for eligibility e. Until the s, the term watchman was more commonly applied to this function, a usage dating back to at least the Middle Ages in Europe where there was no form of law enforcement other than it being a private matter.
This term was carried over to North America where it was interchangeable with night-watchman e. Security officers are sometimes regarded as fulfilling a private policing function. Many security firms and proprietary security departments practice the "detect, deter, observe and report" method. Security officers are not required to make arrests, but have the authority to make a citizen's arrestor otherwise act as an agent of law enforcement, for example, at the request of a police officer or sheriff.
A private security officer's responsibility is protecting their client from a variety of hazards usually in the form of criminal acts. Security personnel enforce company rules and can act to protect lives and property, and they sometimes have a contractual obligation to provide these actions. In addition to basic deterrence, security officers are often trained to perform specialized tasks such as arrest and control including handcuffing and restraintsoperate emergency equipment, perform first aidCPRtake accurate notes, write detailed reports, and perform other tasks as required by the client they are serving.
All security officers are also required to go through additional training mandated by the state for the carrying of weapons such as batons, firearms, and pepper spray e. The number of jobs is expected to grow in the U. One major economic justification for security personnel is that insurance companies particularly fire insurance carriers will give substantial rate discounts to sites which have a hour presence.
For a high risk or high-value property, the discount can often exceed the money being spent on its security program. Discounts are offered because having security on site increases the odds that any fire will be noticed and reported to the local fire department before a total loss occurs.
Also, the presence of security officers particularly in combination with effective security procedures tends to diminish " shrinkage ", theft, employee misconduct, and safety rule violations, property damage, or even sabotage. Many casinos hire security officers to protect money when transferring it from the casino to the casino's bank. Security personnel may also perform access control at building entrances and vehicle gates; meaning, they ensure that employees and visitors display proper passes or identification before entering the facility.Mall of America Security holds itself to the highest standards and is a nationally recognized department staffed with over highly trained personnel.

When there is a large group of people in a shopping mall, it is important that security uses the best security equipment available. Many shopping mall security departments study crime prevention techniques and statistics to improve their security systems.
Most shopping malls use CCTV security cameras to monitor common areas of the mall such as food courts, walkways and parking lots. They also employee security guards to monitor the cameras, walk around the mall and patrol parking areas. Crimes in shopping malls follow a typical pattern and includes shoplifting, nuisance behavior involving juveniles and thefts. Malls that are located in affluent areas attract a greater number of car thieves.
CCTV security cameras have excellent image quality and offer security departments a clear picture of the mall surroundings. Shopping centers use bullet and domed shaped security cameras to keep a watchful eye on the mall. Bullet cameras are easy to see and are used most often in parking lots.
Domed shaped security cameras are found within the walkways, stores and the food courts. Domed shaped cameras are not easy to detect unless you look for them. These cameras also make it impossible to tell which way the camera is pointing. Domed shaped cameras feature dark colored glass that prevents the camera to be seen.
Cameras with wide angles are used to monitor large areas. The housing on bullet cameras located outdoors are made to withstand severe weather or tampering.
Pan, tilt and zoom cameras make it easy for security to change the cameras angle to get a better view of a particular area. Since most shopping malls use security guards to constantly monitor their CCTV security cameras, it is important that employees understand how to recognize criminal behavior while monitoring the live video. The CCTV camera systems must be well placed in order to capture the best video. The presence of these security cameras also deters crime.
Security cameras are also used to monitor employees especially when they are working the cash registers.
Some shopping malls contract with local professional security companies to monitor their shopping centers. This can save the mall time and money. Shootings in shopping malls have occurred in malls across the country. Mall security must prepare for this potential threat.
Many mall security departments are reviewing and updating their security plans to prepare for this type of event. Shopping centers should prepare for any kind of emergency, whether it is a shooting, bomb threat or weather emergency.
Retail malls are considered soft targets by security experts. This kind of environment makes it easy for a gunman to enter and exit the building quickly. This also makes the people who are shopping vulnerable and at risk. Shopping mall security departments must train and prepare for any kind of emergency scenario. They must hire security guards that meet the same standards as any other business with security needs. Parking Lot Security Needs.
People are often a victim of crime in a shopping mall parking lot. Parking lot thieves can quickly steal a purse and be on their way to safety.
Security Employment Niches
With the use of security cameras, mall security can review the images and help law enforcement track down the thief. Some shopping malls have security guards that drive around the parking areas.
This presence can help reduce theft and other crimes.Mall security officers are always looking for new ways to improve their programs. It's challenging to monitor the security and safety of so many people in one place, and planning is necessary to see where resources will be needed in the future to better serve the public.
Officers need to keep abreast of the ever-changing conditions that arise inside and outside malls. This will go a long way to help a security force deal with the many incidents they will encounter. Have a post-orders binder available to all security personnel. It should have a clearly defined mission statement for the mall security department and list all of the duties required of the security officers.

It is also wise to review its contents at least once a year, making updates as needed. Add in-service training throughout the year on an as-needed basis. Cover new cultural trends and your area's crime statistics, gang population and dress fads.
This will help security officers spot suspicious behavior during their daily tours.
Increase high visibility patrols to cut down on crime and be readily available to the public's needs. This is especially important in high-theft areas, food courts, employee entrances, parking lots and receiving docks. Make sure you are operating a high-quality, digital-video-recorder system for camera surveillance. This will increase your ability to record clear video and still pictures of criminal activity to better help law enforcement.
Add extra security officers and police presence as part of a holiday shopper safety program. If that is not enough visual presence, lease or buy a SkyWatch or Segway. The SkyWatch is a guard tower that can be elevated for better surveillance, and the Segway is a highly mobile, two-wheeled patrol vehicle.
Enhance your emergency procedures by adding high-threat, criminal-activity training. Mall security should be aware of what to do when there is a shooter, hostage situation, bomb threat, abduction or rape. Conduct periodic emergency drills, which should consist of tabletop and live exercises.
If possible, include the mall's tenants in at least one after-hour live drill a year. Invite your local police and fire departments to participate in them as well. Emergency-procedures training also should cover such events as a plane crash, hazardous materials exposure, a fire and natural disasters.
Security officers need to be aware of local laws concerning their authority after "observe and report" procedures. They need to know whether they can arrest suspects. Find out what's happening in the world as it unfolds. More Videos Mall security after Kenya: Are we safe? Story highlights Mall security focuses on protecting merchandise Retired cop Dan Murphy came up with a plan that focuses on shoppers Mall of America does lockdown drills, similar to what schools practice Drills aren't a "silver bullet," but they could minimize potential harm, Murphy says.
In the wake of the Westgate shopping mall horror in Kenya, your local mall wants you to know it is doing everything possible to protect you. That's bunk -- at least if you listen to one very knowledgeable former beat cop. Malls boast of spending millions on security, but that security largely protects merchandise, not people, says Dan Murphy, a retired Bloomington, Minnesota, police officer.
Shopping malls can do a better job of protecting shoppers from shooters, and it doesn't take metal detectors, full-body searches, bomb dogs, legions of security officers or a lot of money, he says -- it just takes the will. Questions linger after Kenya mall attack. Murphy helped implement a security plan at Bloomington's Mall of America, one of the nation's largest shopping malls. The framework for the plan grew out of a disaster averted nearly a decade ago.
Are U. Kenya's future security challenges InMurphy, then a patrol officer on the town's east side, said he was sent to investigate a man who was giving polished stones and coins to children on a school playground.
When Murphy located the man a block away, he found the man's van stocked with rifles and "bags of ammunition. No one was harmed, but that wasn't because of a quick, coordinated response by school and police officials. In fact, the response was a "calamity of errors," Murphy recalls. Angry, Murphy confronted the school principal, faulting her for not responding adequately to the threat.
The principal, flummoxed, asked Murphy what she should have done, Murphy said.I need another security job, One that actually cares about it's employees. I'm currently hired as a mall security officer and the job stinks. I do not feel safe working as they only give arm us with handcuffs. Were not allowed to carry pepper spray, yet the law states every citizen is allowed to carry it for defense purposes.
So their telling me average joes can carry pepper spray, yet security can't!!! Does that make any sense??? Sometimes I feel I'm being harassed by mall patrons with negative remarks and rude comments. When were doing exterior patrol, Where told to watch out for car Jackings. What the hell are we supposed to, were not armed, the carjacker is probably more armed then we are, By the time police arrive, he'll be long gone so theres no point.
If you get injured on the job, they won't pay the bills! By far mall security is the worst of the worst jobs, i think mcdonalds employees are treated better. Poorly trained and poorly equipped and we call ourselves "public safety officers", i cant even defend myself. If you want to stay you'll have to learn to shrug off those idiots that call you names and what not. If you feel uncomfortable NOT carrying a weapon you might want to look into self defense classes. The stupidest thing I've had to stop was teenagers riding on top of a car in the parking lot.
Bunch of morons out there, huh? Answer Save. Stinks, doesn't it? My company doesn't allow most of us to carry weapons either. Still have questions? Get your answers by asking now.
